Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer afternoon in Omaha, nothing feels worse than realizing your HVAC isn’t functioning the way it is supposed to. The last thing you need to do is call for cooling system help. But your air conditioner is a quite intricate system, so it can be hard to discover what’s creating the issue on your own.

That’s why The Frazier Company crafted this informational guide to help you see what could be happening with your AC. Here, you’ll see a couple common reasons your family is feeling uncomfortable. And though a couple of these are simple DIY projects, you could want to call in a pro for AC repair.

And if that’s the case, The Frazier Company is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Omaha.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Are Off

Every person uses their thermostat a touch differently to fit their specific preferences. Still, many households make the error of setting their device to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your system will continue to blow even once you’ve achieved your preferred temperature.

This can look like your vents are distributing room temperature air, when in reality it’s simply using the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Trying changing this setting and determine if things change.

2. Your Cooling System Needs a Routine Cleaning

There are two principal places to check for dirt or dust accumulation when your AC doesn’t seem to be operating right.

Before anything else, check out your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch out your filter routinely, accumulated dirt can make it more labor intensive for air to pass through and cool down your space. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time for a substitute. (And in general, you should replace it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter seems good, move to your external unit. Make sure there’s a reasonable amount of room around your air conditioner and clear away plants or dirt around it. This section of your AC lets out the heat from within your house. If the coils outside are congested, you won’t be cool inside.

We suggest setting professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your equipment running smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Losing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the chemical that cools down the air in your home. It cycles between your internal and outdoor system pieces to grab and let off heat, to help your home keep the right temperature. If there is a crack along that system, you won’t be feeling comfortable again until you book professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a drop in treated air, more expensive energy bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises originating from your system.

If you think refrigerant might be leaking, call The Frazier Company for air conditioner repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Should Be Replaced

Your cooling system is made up of a couple important parts. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is broken, your home comfort suffers.

Our The Frazier Company technicians are trained and experienced in HVAC. They can help you figure out and repair any problem.

5. Your System Needs to Be Updated

If your equipment is over 10 years old, it is probably about time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system gets up there in years, it simply won’t function as well as it has in the past. And it may be making your house uncomfortable.

If your air conditioner is more current but still isn’t cooling things off, it could be too small for your living space. HVAC systems are not one-size-fits-all. An air conditioner that’s not big enough simply can’t help a house the way a properly sized HVAC can.
