When it’s a hot summer day in Omaha, nothing could be worse than recognizing your home comfort system isn’t performing the way it is meant to. The last thing you should have to do is schedule AC repair. But your air conditioner is a pretty complicated system, so it can be almost impossible to determine what’s triggering the problem solo.

That’s why The Frazier Company created this handbook to help you understand what might be happening with your AC. Below, you’ll find a couple prevailing explanations for why your home is feeling a little too warm. And while a couple of these are straightforward] DIY projects, you might need to turn to a pro for HVAC repair.

And if you need us, The Frazier Company is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Omaha.

1. Your Thermostat Settings May Be Off

Everyone adjusts their thermostat a bit differently to work with their personal needs. Yet, a number of homeowners make the misstep of setting their thermostat to “On” rather than “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your system will continue to blow even once you’ve attained your set temperature.

This can feel like your ducts are pushing out untreated air, when actually it’s simply utilizing the fan more often than necessary. Change this setting and see if things seem better.

2. Your Home Comfort System Needs Some Cleaning

There are two main areas to investigate for dirt or dust accrual when your air conditioner doesn’t feel like it is operating well.

Firstly, examine your HVAC filter. If you don’t change your filter often enough, built-up dust can make it more difficult for air to pass through and cool down your space. If your filter is obviously dirty or dusty, it’s likely time for a change. (And in general, you should switch it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter appears fine, move to your outside unit. Find out if there’s a reasonable amount of clearing around it and clear any plants or debris stuck there. This part of your system discharges the heat from within your home. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling comfortable inside.

We advise setting professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your equipment operating like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that chills the air in your home. It cycles between your indoor and outdoor system elements to grab and discharge heat, to help your space remain comfortable. If there is a leak along that path, you won’t be comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Signs of a refrigerant leak include a drop in cooled air, pricier monthly charges, frozen evaporator coils and strange hissing noises coming from your air conditioner.

If you suspect refrigerant could be leaking, call The Frazier Company for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be harmful to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Have to Be Replaced

Your system contains a couple important elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is broken, your home comfort will suffer.

Our The Frazier Company experts are certified and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you find and fix any issue.

5. Your System Needs to Be Updated

If your system is over 10 years old, it could likely be a good time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system gets older, it unfortunately won’t work as well as it once did. And it may be making your space uncomfortable.

If your air conditioner is more current but still isn’t cooling things off, it could be too small for your living space. Air conditioners are not all the same. A cooling system that’s not powerful enough just can’t help a house the way a correctly sized air conditioner can.
